Rachel Carson was born May 27, 1907 in Springfield, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest child in the family, as a child she spent most of her time outdoors exploring nature. Rachel was very interested in nature even as a young child she always wondered how living creatures in the environment could be helped. The Carson family supported her goals in life, although many other people didn’t think that she had the ability be successful in her field of work. Carson’s parents were one of her main role models in her life because, they believed in their daughter instead of under estimating her talents. Rachel Carson’s parents were Robert Warden and Maria Frazier, they were a particularly gentle couple who encouraged in their daughter for her love of books and nature and a deep belief in sharing the Earth with all other living beings.
At a young age she became a published author and her ability in writing was obvious when her work was published in the St. Nicholas Magazine. As many thought that it is impossible to get a piece of writing published at such a young age which varied from 10-13, she believed she could be and do anything and had no limits in her life.
She received a scholarship to Pennsylvania College for Women. Rachel was also offered an internship at Woods Hole, Massachusetts and a full scholarship to John Hopkins. She then graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women in 1929 and received her master’s degree from John Hopkins University in 1932.

Although Carson was always very interested in writing from a very young age she wrote many books, mostly about nature and how to help all other living beings on the Earth. Some books she wrote included, Under the Sea Wind, Food from the Sea, Food from Home Waters, The Sea Around Us, Silent Spring and many more. As you can see the books she wrote reflect her life long interest in the life of the seas, the seashores and nature. For all the books Carson wrote she received around 20 awards. This goes to show that she was a very good writer and committed to working hard. Rachel Carson's First Influence in American History-Going Green is what made Silent Spring!

In my opinion, Rachel Carson was one of the greatest Americans because she was one of the first people to actually try to make the environment a better place for humans and all other living things. All of the talk started after Carson wrote one of her most well known books, Silent Spring. After writing this book the government and public started talking in open discussions about the environment and started to pass laws that benefited the world we live in. This in itself shows how it is possible that one person can make a change and gain interest in a cause that wasn’t talked about before Rachel came along.

The book Silent Spring was basically about the wasteful and destructive use of pesticides in 1962. This book brought people to use more caution when using pesticides. It also made people pay more attention regarding the poison in the food supply of animals and the result of which was that it killed lots birds and fish. This was hurtful to Rachel and made her work even harder for her cause because she had a life long interest in the environment. Knowing that humans are purposely harming our world was not acceptable to Rachel. Another problem with using pesticides that her book brought attention too is that some of our food supply may contain pesticides. Her arguments against using pesticides helped lead to restrictions of the use of pesticides in many parts of the world.
Rachel Carson worked tirelessly for the environment; thankfully back when there wasn’t anyone else paying attention to what was going on in the world around them. She pioneered the effort to bring attention to the environment and especially pesticides and the harm they were causing. By trying to prove a point in her book Silent Spring.Carson,Rachel Louise." Rachel Carson's Second Influence in American History- Carson risks it to get the biscut.

After everything that I have learned about Rachel Carson, another reason I believe she is the greatest American is because, she was truly confident in herself and knew she could do anything. Carson made a risky decision in what she wanted to major in biology. It was a great surprise to people at that time because women rarely chose Biology to study. During that time there were hardly any jobs for women scientists. However, Carson worked hard despite the odds and earned her master’s degree in Biology at John Hopkins. She then started to work at the University of Maryland, College Park as a member in the Zoology staff from 1931-1936 which was perfect for her because, of her love for animals and nature. Then she was able to persue both passions of her life throughout her career, in 1949-1952 Carson worked for the Fish and Wildlife Service as an aquatic biologist as the editor in chief. People said that there was no way Rachel would get a job in the biology area, she sure proved them wrong. All in all that is another reason why Rachel Carson is one of the greatest American because, she took a risk in her life by basically becoming the one of the first women to major and have a job in the biology research. This opened the field up for other women who would do the same kind of work."Carson,Rachel Louise." Student Resource Center Gold Document. Gale, 2003. Web. 25 Feb. 2010. Novick, Sheldon M.
